Nuclear Industry Consortium Applauds U.S. NRC Approval of the Southern Nuclear Combined Construction and Operating License for Plant Vogtle

NuStart Energy Development, LLC is a consortium of utilities, including Southern Nuclear, that worked as part of the DOE Nuclear Power 2010 Program to develop the licensing strategy necessary to develop and receive the first Combined Construction and Operating License
(COL) from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The material submitted to the NRC will serve as the reference COL application for the Westinghouse dual-unit AP1000® reactor design.

NRC Concludes Hearing On Vogtle New Reactors, First-ever Combined Licenses To Be Issued

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has concluded its mandatory hearing on Southern Nuclear Operating Company’s (SNC) application for two Combined Licenses (COL) at the Vogtle site in Georgia. In a 4-1 vote, the Commission found the staff’s review adequate to make the necessary regulatory safety and environmental findings, clearing the way for the NRC’s Office of New Reactors to issue the COLs.

Southern Company Subsidiary Receives Historic License Approval for New Vogtle Units, Full Construction Set to Begin

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted today to approve the issuance of the Combined Construction and Operating License (COL) for Plant Vogtle units 3 and 4, the first such license ever approved for a U.S. nuclear plant. Receipt of the COL signifies that full construction can begin.
