Nuclear Industry Consortium Comment on U.S. NRC Approval of the Westinghouse AP1000 Design Certification Amendment

WASHINGTON, DC (December 22, 2011) – NuStart Energy Development LLC is a consortium of utilities that worked with Westinghouse to complete the standard design engineering work for the Westinghouse AP1000® design certification, which will be used as a reference for future AP1000 reactor applications in the U.S.

Statement from Marilyn Kray, president, NuStart Energy Development:

“When the 10 NuStart member utilities got together as a peer network in 2004 to review the potential reactor designs, we saw the Westinghouse AP1000 pressurized water reactor (PWR), with its passive safety systems, had the inherent features that matched NuStart’s values of providing safe, cost-competitive, reliable nuclear energy. NuStart provided the forum for utility members to provide input to the design. After Westinghouse’s completion of extensive first-of-a-kind engineering work, the result is a standard design that reflects the collective operating experience of the major plant operators in the U.S.

“The AP1000 PWR is the reactor design that will set the foundation for the next generation of nuclear plants in the U.S., and we are excited to see it move forward on the path envisioned seven years ago.”

NuStart members are working together to demonstrate the nation’s licensing process and to complete designs for the first advanced nuclear power reactors in the U.S. in nearly 30 years.
