Southern Nuclear Operating Company filed an application for a COL on behalf of the owners of the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Ga. Plant Vogtle is owned by Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power Corporation, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities. The Plant Vogtle owners selected the Westinghouse AP1000 technology for two additional units at the plant site.

Today’s submittal of a combined construction and operating license (COL) application by Entergy Nuclear and NuStart Energy Development for a potential single-unit GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) ESBWR reactor at the Grand Gulf site in Port Gibson, Mississippi, means that NuStart has played a role in five of the six complete applications submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission under the revised process for licensing new reactors.

Entergy, NuStart Announce Submittal of Application for New Nuclear License

Entergy and NuStart Energy Development announce the submittal of a COL for a potential new nuclear unit in Port Gibson, Miss. The application seeks regulatory approvals to potentially build a new unit adjacent to Entergy’s existing Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, a reactor that ranks third among the nation’s 104 nuclear plants for total electricity output over its lifetime of commercial operations. The Grand Gulf license application uses the GE Hitachi ESBWR technology, a design referenced in late 2007 in a similar license application submitted by Dominion Virginia Power. NuStart worked with Dominion to help develop that reference application.

Progress Energy Carolinas Takes Next Step to Secure The Region’s Energy Future

Progress Energy Carolinas, a subsidiary of Progress Energy, announced that it would file a COL application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) later that day for two possible new reactors at the existing Harris Nuclear Plant site near New Hill, N.C. Nuclear power is one of three components of the company's balanced solution strategy, which also includes the use of renewable energy sources and an emphasis on energy efficiency. For purposes of the COL application, Progress Energy selected Westinghouse to supply the reactors for possible expansion of its nuclear generating fleet in the Carolinas and Florida.

Duke Energy Submits New Nuclear License Application to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Duke Energy submitted a COL application for a proposed two-unit nuclear station in Cherokee County, S.C. The proposed two-unit William States Lee III Nuclear Station will have a capacity of 2,234 megawatts. In 2005, Duke Energy announced plans to pursue a new nuclear station in the Carolinas, and began preparing the COL application for two Westinghouse AP1000 generating units.
